Our Curriculum This Year 

We have redesigned the school curriculum plan so that, while it is still based on the National Curriculum, it better reflects our ethos and values. One of the main changes is the addition of planned enrichment and am emphasis on Values-based Education, developing a Growth Mindset (a belief that everyone can learn and improve) and teaching Habits of the Mind (skills that will help children to become better learners).  We want our children to have aspirations for the future, but believe that in order for that to happen, we need to give them different experiences so that they know what they might aspire to.

Reception Curriculum

At The Holme we follow the required Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. This is a play based curriculum which is can accommodate the individual needs of children. Click here to see what topics the children are learning about this year. The curriculum is organised in such a way as to capture and develop the children's own interests whilst ensuring a rich and balanced range of activities and skills are introduced.  Your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.  

These are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development 
  • Personal, social and emotional development

These prime areas are those most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas.

These are:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

These 7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. We will be supporting your child and planning a very flexible curriculum to make sure that the activities are suited to your child’s unique needs and interests.  Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. We are interested in how children learn and want to give children opportunities to develop and show the Characteristics of Effective Learning which are;

  • Active learning
  • Creating and thinking critically
  • Playing and exploring

We are currently in the process of developing our newly enlarged outdoor provision area to further engage the children with their learning within a safe and stimulating environment.

We communicate everyday with parents through the use of our online tool, Tapestry.  We can show pictures and videos of what your child has been doing during the day and write notes too.  Parents can upload pictures and news from home.

Phonics 

The children are introduced to the important skills of reading and writing using the Jolly Phonics programme in Year R which has proved to be highly engaging, popular and successful introduction to synthetic phonics. 

The children's phonic skills are further developed  to cover more letter - sound variations as the children progress through school using the same principles and practice, allowing continuity in learning. The teaching of phonics is also used to support spelling patterns and irregular spellings of words children will encounter when reading and writing.
